The Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid (Thermo Fisher Scientific) is a mass spectrometer that combines three different analyzers: a quadrupole (enabling efficient ion selection), a linear trap (allowing rapid detection of fragmentation spectra), and an Orbitrap (providing very precise mass measurement with ultra-high resolution up to 450K).

In addition to the classical CID fragmentation, this mass spectrometer is also capable of performing other types of peptide fragmentation thanks to its HCD cell (particularly useful for TMT quantifications) and its ETD source, which is more efficient for identifying post-translational modifications such as phosphorylations, glycosylations, etc.

This instrument is coupled with an ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography system (up to 800 bars) U3000 RSLC nano (Thermo Fisher Scientific) and a FAIMS Pro ion mobility system allowing background noise reduction in spectra.

Although it is an older instrument compared to others in the platform, its precision and versatility make the Orbitrap Fusion an instrument of choice for the analysis of post-translational modifications (PTMs) or protein complexes (immunoprecipitations, pull-downs).
