This training course is aimed at people who want to know how to choose a statistical analysis model based on the data collected, as well as those who want to know how to interpret the main statistical analyses. This course does not cover how to conduct an analysis using software (see training courses 08, 13, 15), nor the validation of these models (see training course 09).

Details: this training course is aimed primarily at people in the fundamental sciences who conduct laboratory experiments and who need to conduct simple statistical analyses, or sometimes more complex ones because of their experimental design involving several variables. For those wishing to conduct their own analyses, Training Course 09, “Parametric Model Validation,” is strongly recommended afterwards.

This course is aimed at people who are familiar with basic statistical analysis and who need to conduct statistical analysis themselves as part of their projects. 

Content: 

• Postulates, sources of statistical bias and predictive power of the main parametric models (ANOVA, T-test, linear regression, logistic regression). 
• Definitions, elements to be validated, sources of problems and solutions. 
• Examples of validation in SPSS (although the examples are presented in this software, the training content is relevant regardless of the software you use). 

Prerequisite: participants should already be familiar with the main parametric models and understand the contexts in which they are used (see Training Course 2 – Basic Statistical Analysis).

• Part 1 (1h30): How SPSS works, manipulating data and variables. 
• Part 2 (1 h): Basic statistical analysis in SPSS. 

Prerequisite: the second part (optional) aims to show how to perform basic statistical analyses in SPSS. Participants should already be able to identify the relevant statistical analyses according to the context (see Training Course 2: Basic statistical analysis). 

Optional – If you have a laptop and would like to use it to follow along during the training and take part in the exercises:

Optional – If you have a laptop with SAS (version 9.4), you can use it to follow the course. It is also possible to install one of the two free versions of SAS under certain conditions (although the interface is different): SAS On Demand and SAS University Edition. Please note that no troubleshooting will be offered during the training course for the installation of these software packages.
