Mélanie Bérubé

Professor Bérubé obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Université de Montréal. After several years of practice as a nurse in the fields of trauma and critical care, she obtained a post-master’s acute care nurse practitioner diploma at the University of Toronto, followed by a PhD in nursing at Mc Gill University. She then joined the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at Université Laval for post-doctoral studies in epidemiology and traumatology.

Prof. Bérubé is an FRQ-S awarded researcher. Her research interests focus on high value-care, i.e. providing the best possible care while using healthcare resources efficiently to achieve optimal outcomes for each patient. More specifically, her research focuses on the prevention of chronic pain and the inappropriate use of analgesics, including opioids, in populations with traumatic injuries throughout their care trajectory. Her work is also aimed at improving the practices of healthcare professionals in order to prevent mental disorders in persons who have sustained traumatic injuries, and to optimize the management of persons affected by these disorders. Prof. Bérubé is also leading research projects to de-implement potentially unnecessary practices in healthcare systems. To carry out her work, Prof. Bérubé uses mixed research designs and clinical trials to adapt and test interventions based on patient needs in real-life practice settings.

Recognized for her leadership in the fields of trauma and pain, Prof. Bérubé is President of the Interdisciplinary Trauma Network of Canada of the Trauma Association of Canada. She is also Co-Director of the Consortium on Treatment Effectiveness and Safety of the Quebec Pain Research Network and a member of the Equity-Diversity-Inclusion Committee of the Canadian Pain Society
