Pr. Louis Flamand is a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, and Immunology in the Faculty of Medicine at Université Laval (Quebec City), and Principal Investigator in the Division of Infectious and Immune Diseases at the CHU de Québec Research Center. Prior to joining Université Laval, Pr. Flamand obtained his PhD from the Université de Montréal and completed postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland) and the Institute of Human Virology (Baltimore, Maryland). He holds an MBA in Pharmaceutical Management from Université Laval.

From 2008 to 2019, he was President of Université Laval’s Biohazard Committee. He has been a scientific advisor to the HHV-6 Foundation since 2006. Since 2021, he has led the research activities of the “Virology” pillar of the National Rapid Response Network on Coronavirus Variants, which focuses on the biology, pathogenesis, and prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infections. He also leads the Canadian Consortium of Biosafety Level 3 University Laboratories initiative, which aims to facilitate and accelerate research on Risk Group 3 pathogens for Canada. For decades, his work has focused on understanding viral pathogenesis (SARS-CoV-2, FLU, CMV, HSV) using a variety of animal models housed in biosafety levels 2 and 3 containments.

Throughout his career, Pr. Flamand has received several competitive fellowships and ongoing financial support from a number of funding agencies for his work in virology. Pr. Flamand is the author of over 120 peer-reviewed publications.

His research focuses on the mechanisms leading to chromosomal integration of human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6) and the biological consequences associated with this event. Pr. Flamand is also interested in the pathogenesis of pandemic viruses such as SARS-CoV-2.
