As a researcher at the Centre d’excellence sur le vieillissement de Québec (CEVQ), CIUSSS de la Capitale Nationale, and the CHU de Québec-Université Laval Research Center, an associate professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Université Laval and adjunct faculty at the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University, my background and training is in pharmacy, epidemiology, and pharmaco-epidemiology. I’m interested in medication use, epidemiological methods, and the organization of health care and services. Since fall 2022, I’ve been in charge of the CEVQ’s research mission.

My research has helped to identify and clarify certain risk factors for major neurocognitive disorders (MND), and I’m interested in better specifying and measuring these factors, as well as in interventions to optimize them for aging persons, with the intention to prevent or delay the onset of MND.

Currently, my projects focus on optimizing medication use among vulnerable seniors, particularly those with MND. My projects aim to develop and evaluate interventions to reduce the use of inappropriate medications among these persons. Different living environments for seniors are targeted by involving pharmacists and by increasing interprofessional collaboration. This work has led to a new method of collaboration between nurses, pharmacists, and physicians in CHSLDs to better manage residents’ medication therapy (PEPS). Currently, we are studying an intervention to systematically involve pharmacists working in Family Medicine Groups in the pharmacotherapy of seniors under investigation for, or diagnosed with, minor or major neurocognitive disorders.

With my colleague Clermont Dionne, a specialist in pain epidemiology, we are also studying the use of medical cannabis for chronic musculoskeletal pain. Several projects have evaluated the needs, perceptions, and attitudes towards this treatment strategy among persons living with this type of pain, and among their physicians. Currently, I’m collaborating on the validation of a questionnaire aimed at better quantifying the use of medical or recreational cannabis, and I’m interested in the issues surrounding self-medication with cannabis.
