Dr. Marcel Émond (MD, M.Sc.) is a full professor and attending physician in the Department of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Universit Laval. He practices emergency medicine at the Hôpital de l’Enfant-Jésus, a tertiary trauma center, since 2004. He was the first officially trained French-speaking clinician-researcher through residency and master’s programs in clinical research in Quebec for the emerging specialty of emergency medicine at that time.

As an experienced clinician-researcher funded by the Quebec Health Research Fund, Dr. Émond is primarily associated with the CHU de Québec-Université Laval Research Center, where he is a member of the Population Health and Optimal Health Practices axis. He is also affiliated with the Organization, Care/Services, and Health Policy pole of VITAM – Center for Sustainable Health Research. He serves on the board of directors of the Association des médecins d’urgence du Québec (AMUQ) as the scientific director of the annual congress. He also represents the RIUS Université Laval to facilitate the transfer of information and knowledge from this professional scholarly society. In 2010, he co-led the creation of one of the first emerging teams funded by CIHR aiming to establish a link between emergency medicine, geriatrics, and rehabilitation for patients consulting the Emergency Department following minor trauma. In 2019, Dr. Émond founded the International Francophone Alliance for Emergency Research (AiFRU) with the aim of consolidating and improving international collaboration among French-speaking researchers in emergency medicine. This alliance now only includes researchers from more than 10 member countries and is embedded in the creation of a network of emergency professionals under the direction of the French Society of Emergency Medicine and the AMUQ.

In 2017, Dr. Émond founded a French-language evidence-based medicine web platform called TopMU to accelerate knowledge transfer in emergency medicine. In 2019, TopMF (family medicine) was also launched, followed by TopSI (nursing care) and TopSPU (paramedics) in 2020. In 2022, a corresponding platform to TopMU was launched in France, TopMU.fr, allowing for alignment between France and Quebec. These multidisciplinary platforms offer online evidence-based educational activities in French by independent experts and currently have over 5500 Quebecois and international subscribers.

Dr. Émond’s research program focuses on improving urgent care for elderly patients in the Emergency Department. It aims to create new evidence-based care models and tools, optimize knowledge application, and strengthen research capacities in this field. This will be achieved through three research axes in the user’s journey:

  • Improvement of care for elderly patients who have suffered major, minor, or isolated trauma;
  • Adaptation of the pathway and stay of elderly patients in the Emergency Department.
  • Optimization of investigations, medical literacy, and safe discharges during an Emergency Department consultation.
