Pr. Marc Pouliot is the director of the infectious and immune diseases axis at the Research Center of the CHU de Québec-Université Laval. He is also a full professor in the Department of Microbiology, Infectiology, and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine of Université Laval. His research focuses on the neutrophil and the roles it plays in host protection.

Neutrophil Activation Pathways
An important aspect of his research program concerns the involvement of neutrophils in orchestrating the inflammatory response. The way this cell responds to signals received can have major impacts on both the progression and resolution of inflammation. His team is therefore making efforts to identify and better control the activation state of neutrophils.

Implication of Neutrophils in the Inflammatory Aspects of Lupus
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that primarily affects women of childbearing age. There is currently no cure. Many suspect neutrophils of accompanying the inflammatory flares associated with lupus and causing tissue damage, in part due to their association with immune complexes present in the body. Strategies to calm neutrophils, specifically in the context of lupus, are under development.
