Dr. Barabé is a hematologist specialized in the treatment of acute leukemias and lymphomas and is also part of the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation/cellular therapy team at the CHU de Québec-Université Laval.

His research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that transform normal human stem cells into leukemic cells. He models acute leukemias in immunodeficient mice that develop human leukemias from genetically modified human stem cells using various molecular and cellular techniques. This modeling helps to better understand the stages of leukemogenesis and the role of different mutations in the process. The leukemias generated are also used to screen new molecules to develop new treatments, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Montreal.
