The per diem accommodation fees charged by the Animal Facility are linked to the protocol and its type of funding.
Activities performed outside of per diem by our staff are billed at an hourly rate according to the protocol and its type of funding, based on the current pricing. A minimum of 15 minutes is charged for each request for technical assistance. Utilizing our experienced animal health technicians is a way for our researchers and their teams to focus on research, while the animal care staff ensures the well-being of their experimental animals. This “à la carte” service allows them to save time (our technicians are trained and experienced), ongoing training (the techniques for which assistance is requested are generally common techniques for our staff), benefits, etc.
Please refer to the related documents to know the activities included in the per diem (not charged), the billed activities, and the applicable rates for the per diem 2025-2026.
The CHU de Québec-Université Laval Research Center requires that research projects using animals be divided according to the type of funding, objectives, and based on project review by a peer committee. This division is required for several reasons:
- In accordance with the policies of the Canadian Council on Animal Protection (CCPA) and Université Laval, all research projects, including “pilot study” research projects, must undergo peer evaluation before the evaluation of the request for the use of live animals by one of the CPAUL.1
- For projects related to private funds or internal funding, the researcher must submit the separate project to CEIPUL for peer scientific merit evaluation.
- For projects funded by funding agencies2, the researcher must include the project’s SIRUL in their request for animal use submitted to CPAUL.
- Responsible conduct in research requires rigorous use of public or private research funds, solely for purposes justifying their allocation (expenses must be charged to the specific project for which they are incurred as they occur).
- The pricing at the CHU de Québec Animal Care Service is divided into 3 categories3:
-
- Internal: projects of CHU de Québec-Université Laval Research Center researchers AND funded by recognized organizations
- Université Laval: projects of UL-affiliated researchers AND funded by recognized organizations OR projects carried out as part of a public-private grant program in which the partner benefits from rights or an option on the resulting outcomes.
- External: projects of external researchers OR projects related to private contracts
- PNF ETH-4 « Évaluation interne par les pairs des projets de recherche utilisant des animaux »
- See Annex 2 of PNF ETH-4 to know the list of funding agencies with a peer committee.
- When animals are associated with two separate projects, the higher rate applies.
