N95 masks are specially designed to filter particles, but they are not all the same. The protection mostly used for hospital care has both NIOSH (particle filtration) and FDA (fluid resistance) certifications. Since 2015, N95 masks have been a requirement by CNESST for respiratory protection in the Animal Facility. This is mandatory to protect users from the main contaminants present in the animal facility (allergens, litter dust, viruses, bacteria). Since resistance to biological fluids is not an issue in the animal facility, only the NIOSH standard is required.

Following the pandemic, the Direction des Services Vétérinaires (DSV) of Université Laval obtained an exemption allowing the modification of the SST-3 NPF concerning the Respiratory Protection Program, for all affiliated centers’ animal facilities. Despite ensuring tight management of our N95 mask inventory, the Research Center Management had to establish a contingency plan for its Animal Facility. The YELLOW ZONE came into effect on March 31, 2020, and the ORANGE ZONE was instituted on November 4, 2020. Wearing N95 masks is now optional depending on the location and tasks performed. To guide you, displays of required protective equipment have been modified at the entrance of each animal facility room.
