Dr. Mahmoud Rouabhia is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry at Université Laval. He obtained his PhD in immunology in France, followed by postdoctoral training in Canada. He also holds a certificate in microbiology. Since 1993, at Univesité Laval, Dr. Rouabhia has developed a multidisciplinary research program, including immunology, cell biology, tissue engineering and microbiology.

The main areas of his research program are:

  • Understanding the interactions between the host and oral microorganisms
  • The interaction of oral tissues and the oral ecosystem with various agents including cigarette smoke, e-cigarettes, cannabis smoke, cannabis derivatives, etc.
  • The study of several natural and synthetic antimicrobial peptides on oral health.
  • The interaction of dental biomaterials/polymers with tissues and the oral ecosystem.

Through sustained involvement in teaching and research, Dr. Rouabhia contributes to the training of students at different levels (master’s/doctorate/postdoctoral studies). To date, more than 50 students (postdocs, PhD students, and masters) have been trained by Dr. Rouabhia.

Dr Rouabhia’s research program is supported by granting agencies such as the NIH, CIHR, NSERC, Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRSQ), the Oral and Bone Health Research Network, etc.
