Dr Michel Dorval is Full Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy. He holds a Master’s degree in Psychology (1984) and a Doctorate in Epidemiology (1997) from Université Laval, complemented by postdoctoral training from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Harvard Medical School) thanks to a Terry Fox Fellowship from the National Cancer Institute of Canada. From 1999 to 2011, he constantly held research career awards (Junior I, Junior II, Senior) from the Fonds de la recherche du Québec-Santé (FRQS).

Since the beginning of his career, Dr. Dorval has used a variety of methodological approaches, both quantitative and qualitative, to better understand the impact of breast cancer at all stages of the disease on patients, women at risk and their families. He has always demonstrated a commitment to improving health services through active involvement in knowledge translation. For example, the results of his work led to the creation in 2012 of Centre ROSE (Ressources en Oncogénétique pour le Soutien et l’Éducation), which he co-founded with his colleague Dr. Jocelyne Chiquette. The mission of Centre ROSE was to inform and support people with hereditary cancer risk, and to provide evidence-based tools to health professionals. Center ROSE has received several awards, including the Hommage aux Innovations Sociales from Université Laval (2014), the Prix d’Excellence Innovation dans la Communauté from the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation (2016) and the Prix Promotion de la Santé et Prévention from the Direction générale de cancérologie du Québec (2016). In 2015, Centre ROSE evolved into Réseau ROSE (www.reseaurose.ca) by adding satellites in various regions of Quebec. As a continuation of the Réseau ROSE, work is underway since 2020 under the aegis of RUISSS-UL to create the Réseau en Oncogénétique de l’Est du Québec.

In addition to his work on breast cancer, Dr. Dorval has always been interested in palliative care. He is a member of the research team at the Maison Michel-Sarrazin and of the Réseau québécois de recherche en soins palliatifs et de fin de vie (RQSPAL) since its founding. He is currently leading an interdisciplinary and intersectoral team whose work aims to 1) evaluate the social and professional acceptability of psilocybin-assisted therapy to relieve existential distress at the end of life, 2) identify issues to be considered for access to this innovative therapy and 3) propose recommendations establishing guidelines for the use of psilocybin for therapeutic purposes in the Quebec medico-legal context.
