Dr. Macha Bourdages is a pediatric intensivist at the Mère-Enfant Soleil Centre of the CHU of Quebec. She is also head of the pediatric intensive care unit, as well as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Laval University. Upon completing her training in medicine and general pediatrics at Laval University, Quebec City, she continued her studies at the University of Montreal where she completed: a complementary year in pediatric cardiology and a subspecialty training in pediatric intensive care. She also completed a master’s degree in biomedical sciences, clinical research option, at the University of Montreal. Dr. Bourdages is Vice-Chair Quebec’s intensivists society’s administrative committee, and a pediatric intensive care representative of Quebec’s expert group in intensive care.
Dr. Bourdages has a variety of interests in clinical research. As a principal investigator or site manager for multicentre studies, her interests revolve around acute and severe childhood illness, pediatric cardiology, and pediatric intensive care sedation. Dr. Bourdages is also involved in teaching research. She was responsible for the clinical research of Laval University’s general pediatric residency program from 2008 to 2017. She developed a research training curriculum for residents, including courses and the creation of a Research Half Day, a popular and unifying annual event within the Department of Pediatrics.
Currently, Dr. Bourdages is working on projects pertaining to the management of viral bronchiolitis and opioid withdrawal syndrome. She is also involved in multicentre projects, including a project on the distress of caregivers working in pediatric intensive care. In collaboration with Quebec researchers from other university hospitals, Dr. Bourdages is working on the creation of a common database to facilitate multicentre clinical research in pediatric intensive care.
