Dr. Line Guénette is a researcher within the Population Health and Health Best Practices Axis of the CHU of Quebec-Laval University Research Centre, as well as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy at Laval University. She is also a clinical pharmacist within the CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale. Her research program aims to identify and better understand the issues of drug use, particularly in people with diabetes and the elderly. She is also working to find efficient ways to optimize the use of medicines and to transform professional practices.
She is the recipient of a clinical investigator-junior 1 fellowship from the Fonds de la recherche Québec-Santé (FRQ-S) and of the FRQ-S/Société québécoise d’hypertension artérielle (SQHA) Jacques-de-Champlain Scholarship.
Towards a better understanding of the problems of drug use
Although there are now several effective and well-tolerated drugs to control several chronic diseases and reduce associated complications, problems of poor control are still too common. One of the most important barriers to optimal treatment of chronic diseases is the non-optimal use of drugs by patients and health professionals. The first step to optimize the use of medicines is to better understand the determinants of misuse. Dr. Guénette and her team are achieving this by using large databases of administrative data or surveys of patients and health professionals.
Optimizing the use of medicines
According to recent literature reviews, studies that evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to optimize drug use often have important methodological shortcomings. Moreover, very few of them describe in detail the applied interventions, the targeted determinants and the design of the interventions. It is therefore essential to improve research on the best ways to intervene and on the interventions most likely to be implemented in the Quebec context. It is also crucial to work towards reducing inappropriate practices and implementing new knowledge and activities with proven benefits. To achieve this, Dr. Guénette works closely with clinicians and decision-makers in clinical settings. A project to implement and evaluate the impact of pharmacists’ new activities under Bill 41 is currently underway.
