Gaétan Laroche is a professor at the Department of Materials Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Laval University. He is a member of the Centre de Recherche sur les Matériaux Avancés (CERMA) at Laval University and of Quebec Center on Advanced Materials (QCAM). His research focuses on the surface modification of biomedical materials to improve their biocompatibility. Dr. Laroche is internationally renowned for his work on surface modification of materials that make use of the use of gaseous plasmas. More specifically, he is developing surface modification strategies for vascular and orthopedic biomaterials to improve their biocompatibility. Dr. Laroche was awarded the title of Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) from the International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering. Engaged both academically and scientifically, Dr. Laroche sat on several scientific research evaluation committees and was a member of the executive committee responsible for organizing the prestigious World Biomaterials Congress held in Montreal in May 2016. He was also awarded the joint prize given by the Club des Ambassadeurs of the Palais des congrès de Montréal and the Fonds de recherche du Québec and was chosen as the personality of the week by Le Soleil / Radio-Canada.

Towards materials with better blood compatibility
Today, cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world, killing 17 million people a year. For about 1.5 million patients, the best solution is to use a vascular substitute to replace obstructed blood vessels. In this context, Dr. Laroche’s team seeks to develop surface modification strategies for synthetic materials to allow better integration with the physiological medium.

Fighting against infection of orthopedic prostheses infection
Infection is one of the main problems when implanting orthopedic prostheses. The modification of the chemical composition of orthopedic materials makes it possible to improve their interactions with cells of the human body and to actively combat any bacterial colonization.
