Christopher Fletcher holds an MSc and PhD in Anthropology from the Université de Montréal and was professor of Anthropology at the University of Alberta before coming to Laval University in 2011, and joining the SP-POS team in 2014. Full Professor in the Department of social and preventative medicine at Laval University, he is also responsible for the First Nations and Inuit Doctors Training Program of Québec, a four-faculty collaboration that is increasing the number of indigenous physicians in the Province. He has also contributed to the development of the research and evaluation component of the Clinique Santé Pour Tous (SPOT), an outreach and educational initiative that brings primary healthcare services to difficult to reach people in five different locations throughout Quebec City.
A medical and ecological anthropologist, whose primary research focus for the past 20 years has been with northern Indigenous communities in Canada, his work examines the relationship between culture, place, and health. Recent projects are diverse, and include work on public interventions and discourse in northern impact assessment processes; the documentation of traditional plant medicines in community wellbeing efforts in Deline, NT; the provision of services to Inuit in urban centers, the social and cultural contexts, and meanings of health in aboriginal communities; and the health effects of housing transitions in Inuit regions. He is currently Principal Investigator on the CIHR-funded health survey of urban Inuit – a collaboration with the Southern Quebec Inuit Association — and co-lead of the Community Component of the Qanuilirpitaa? Nunavik regional health survey. Within each of his research areas, he is interested in the articulation of traditional, indigenous, and alternative research methods, tools, and dissemination strategies, with a specific focus on visual approaches.
