Michel Dorval is a Full Professor at the Laval University Faculty of Pharmacy, and scientist at the Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec-Axe Oncologie. He holds a master’s degree in Psychology (1984) and a Doctorate in Epidemiology (1997) from Laval University, complemented by postdoctoral training from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Harvard Medical School) thanks to a Terry Fox Fellowship from the National Cancer Institute of Canada. From 1999 to 2011, he has constantly held research career awards (Junior I, Junior II, Senior) from the Fonds de la recherche du Québec-Santé (FRQS).

Since the mid 90’s, his research has focused on the psychosocial issues related to hereditary and familial breast cancer. From 2001 to 2007, he led the psychosocial component of the research program INHERIT BRCAs (Interdisciplinary Health Research International Team on Breast Cancer Susceptibility), which was then funded in 2008 as a CIHR team working on the familial risks of breast cancer. Using a variety of quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches, his team highlighted the relevance of providing psychosocial support to women tested for a genetic predisposition to breast and ovarian cancers and demonstrated the importance of providing continuing medical education on hereditary cancers to primary care physicians.

In 2012, his work led to the creation of the Centre ROSE (Ressources en Oncogénétique pour le Soutien et l’Éducation), which he co-founded with his colleague Dr. Jocelyne Chiquette thanks to funding from the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. The Centre ROSE‘s mission is to inform and support people with an inherited cancer risk, and to provide education on hereditary cancers to healthcare professionals, based on evidence. Since 2015, the Centre ROSE has evolved into the Réseau ROSE (Network) by adding satellites in the Montreal, Saguenay-Lac St-Jean, and Lower Saint-Lawrence regions. Since its creation, the Centre ROSE has received various awards, including Hommage aux Innovations Sociales from Laval University (2014), the Community Innovation Award of Excellence from the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation (2016), and the Health Promotion and Prevention Award from the Direction générale de cancérologie du Québec (2016).
