Caroline Diorio has a PhD in epidemiology (2005). Following her studies in bioinformatics and molecular oncology (2005-2008), she set up her research laboratory at Saint-Sacrement Hospital, which is part of the CHU de Québec-Laval University network, where she oversees the storage of breast cancer samples for the Tissue and Data Bank Axis of the Cancer Research Network. She holds a senior research grant and is also an associate professor and the director of epidemiology programs in Laval University’s Department of Social and Preventive Medicine. Dr Diorio is also part of the research group from the Centre des maladies du sein du CHU de Québec-Université Laval. She is the author or co-author of over 80 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, one third of these publications focusing on breast tissue density:  a well-established and intermediary risk factor for breast cancer.

Her most recent research projects aim at a more personalized approach to the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. On one hand, her work aims at understanding how our lifestyle can influence the onset, evolution and treatment of breast cancer, to develop personalized prevention and treatment strategies for this type of cancer. Among the different life habits studied, she is mainly interested in obesity, physical activity, and nutrition. On the other hand, the heart of her work focuses on the identification of molecular risk and prognosis markers for breast cancer that can be modulated through changes in our lifestyle habits or can be targeted by preventive and therapeutic agents. Among others, she studies inflammatory, hormonal, metabolic, genetic and epigenetic markers in the blood, and the various components of breast tissue, as well as breast lesions of varying degrees of severity. Her laboratory is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, theFondation du cancer du sein du Québec, and the Fonds de recherche du Québec-santé.
