Research project

Dr. Lisa Topolnik, professor at the Dept. of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bio-informatics at Université Laval and researcher at the CHU de Québec-Université Laval (CHUL pavillon) is looking for a Research Assistant. The team research themes cover a wide spectrum of subjects from neural circuits involved in memory formation and affected in the Alzheimer's Disease to motor control and circuit abnormalities in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The projects use a variety of techniques, but mainly electrophysiology, two-photon microscopy, transcriptomics, anatomy, immunohistochemistry and behavioural studies on transgenic mice.

Job description

The candidate is expected to perform different experiments related to the team research projects. The experimental protocols will use stereotaxic surgery (injections of NC1 and NC2 viruses and markers, implantation of electrodes) on laboratory mice; organotypic slice culture; genotyping using PCR and brain tissue analysis using immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. The candidate is also expected to manage the lab (maintain the stocks and place the orders, manage the mouse colonies and calibrate the instruments).

Skills needed

Bac in physiology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences or related field.


• Excellent knowledge of procedures (PNF) for rodents (injections, analgesia and anesthesia, stereotaxic surgery, euthanasia).
• Excellent technical skills in organotypic slice culture preparation, PCR and in immunohistochemistry (fixation and brain extraction, preparation of brain sections using vibratome and cryostat): demonstrated experience with all techniques is required.
• Highly efficient time and resource management.
• Fluent English and French (speaking and writing).
• Excellent adaptation capacity, teamwork and interpersonal communication skills.

Qualities

Experience in electrophysiology in vitro or in vivo (patch-clamp, field potential) will be an asset.
